This paper provides an example of the Open Innovation approach Jacobs is applying to researching new technologies relative to our core competencies and adjacent core markets.

The GenShock™ system offers the potential for active variable damping control for semi-active ride control, improved driver comfort, and rollover mitigation, while recovering energy in electrical form that would normally be dissipated as heat in conventional “shock absorbers” or suspension dampers. Heavy Duty vehicles, due to their large mass, offer some of the best opportunities for energy recovery, effectively unloading a vehicle’s alternator, and thereby avoiding burning additional fuel to power the vehicle’s electrical systems.

Jacobs, in cooperation with Open Innovation partner Levant Power, is seeking to commercialize this new type of vehicle system for Heavy Duty vehicles of all types, specifically for On-Highway trucks. Several prototype systems are currently in operation. This technology is seen as being available in the near term.

On April 25th, 2012, Jacobs will present this new technology at the SAE 2012 World Congress, Detroit, MI, in the “Vehicle Electrification Strategies for Sustainability” session at 11:00 a.m. Following the presentation, at 1 p.m., representatives from Jacobs and Levant Power will be available at SAE demo booths to show hardware and explain GenShock™ functionality in more detail.

Development of an Engine Brake for a natural gas engine is just another example of Jacobs’ technical ability to meet those challenges.

The Engine Brake by Jacobs® was a result of a two-year collaboration between Jacobs and Cummins engineers to provide an engine brake to exceed the design challenges associated with a natural gas engine.

The Engine Brake by Jacobs® will be offered as optional equipment and will be available in 2013.

JVS Develops Bridge Brake Technology

Bloomfield, CT, USA – Jacobs Vehicle Systems™, the world’s leading supplier of heavy-duty engine retarding and valve actuation solutions, announced today that it has developed a new integrated engine braking technology. This technology integrates the functionality of a standard Compression Release Brake into the ultra-small footprint of a valve bridge.

In response to the global engine suppliers’ drive to minimize weight and space impact on the vehicle, Jacobs’ engineers continue to focus on new ways of integrating the braking function into the valve train. The Bridge Brake represents the most recent extension of this effort. This new lightweight design provides excellent retarding performance with zero valve train height increase. The Bridge Brake is especially suited for small-displacement engines and other applications where packaging space is at a premium.

This braking system, which was first launched on the Hyundai 10L engine, replaces the standard exhaust valve bridge with a braking valve bridge. Based on Jacobs’ extensive Lost Motion know-how, the traditional valve train componentry is maintained, while allowing new complex valve motions to be achieved.

The US patent office recently granted comprehensive patent 7,905,208. This patent, along with other Jacobs Intellectual Property, covers this technology and its derivatives, allowing adaptation to various engine configurations.

This technology provides the ability to decompress the engine cylinders for better engine response under a range of new applications. It can also combine the functionality of a bleeder brake or it can be used in conjunction with a Compression Release engine brake

As vehicle and engine manufacturers strive to reduce their impact on the environment and create more energy efficient trucks, the adoption of start/stop and hybrid technologies will become more prevalent. Jacobs continues to create new technologies such as this decompression device to support our customer’s efforts.

The Jacobs’ prototype bleeder/decompression system is a bolt-on device which holds an exhaust valve open during startup to reduce the amount of torque required to start the engine. Test data confirms that this reduction in torque leads to a reduction in energy consumed by the starter. This technology provides vehicle retarding, reduced wear and tear on the starting system, improved cold start, reduced battery drain, and less shaking during engine shut-down.

On October 3rd, 2011, Jacobs will present this new technology in a poster display at the “Directions in Engine-efficiency and Emissions Research” (DEER) conference in Detroit, MI. This poster covers Jacobs’ mechanical bleeder/decompression technology development efforts along with simulation and test results.
