Formula SAE is a collegiate program in which students design, manufacture and compete in a formula-style race car.  Formula SAE provides these students with challenging projects that involve the planning, design, manufacturing and marketing skills required to introduce a new product into a specific consumer market.

The funding for the team is solely dependent on its sponsors, of which Jacobs has been a major contributor, making the support of local companies crucial to its success.  The team will be competing at 3 main events this summer against hundreds of teams from around the globe.  The car will also debut at many local car shows and race events giving sponsors significant exposure in the automotive market.

 Jacobs values the opportunity to support community programs like UCONN Formula SAE.  Building this relationship with the University provides opportunities for summer internships and possible future hires of The University of Connecticut School of Engineering's top students.

Facebook Contest “Trip to Vegas” Announces Winners for Best Jake Brake Story

Bloomfield, CT USA – Jacobs Vehicle Systems, the world’s leading supplier of heavy-duty diesel engine retarding systems, is proud to award three prizes to Jake Brake fans for their stories submitted in our facebook “Trip to Vegas” contest.  In celebration of our 50th year anniversary, we at JVS wanted to show our appreciation to our loyal brake users who have made us who we are today.  We asked Jake enthusiasts to send us a story, photo or video answering the question, “Why is a Jake Brake Important to you?”  Friends, family and fans were encouraged to vote on their favorite entry to advance the story to the final round to be reviewed by a panel of judges at JVS.  After a difficult review and decision process, the finalists were selected and notified of their good fortune.

The grand prize for the best Jake Brake story went to Deborah and Lon Okolotowicz from South Carolina.  Their story of how the Jake Brake saved their lives one night in 1983 can be viewed here.  This lucky couple will enjoy a two nights / three day stay at the Luxor Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, homestretch tickets for three days of NASCAR events, and $700 towards travel expenses!  The husband and wife trucking team winners were given a tour of our manufacturing facilities with Jacobs Vehicle Systems President, Rob Tykal, and members of our executive staff.  The enthusiastic Jake Brake fans were very happy with their prizes and, as an added bonus, the trip will be the weekend of Deborah’s birthday!  We are sure they will enjoy their weekend get-away.

Scott Grenerth from Connecticut took a second place $500 fuel card prize with a funny Jake Brake story which can be viewed here.  Scott was very grateful for the extra help around the holidays.  Third place winner of a $250 fuel card went to Jake Brake fan Robbin Gardner, her story of learning of how to use her Jake Brake can be read here.

The Shanghai Bashi Logistic Company is home to over 300 trucks, however due to the lack of Jake Brake awareness, are unequipped.  Jacobs Vehicle Systems provided essential information and training and the benefits of Jake Brake use, such as providing a safe driving environment for truck drivers and improved efficiency. 

The safety consciousness of China is rising, and Jacobs will work along side the trucking companies to provide a safer driving experience.

In response to the global engine suppliers’ drive to minimize weight and space impact on the vehicle, Jacobs’ engineers continue to focus on new ways of integrating the braking function into the valve train. The Bridge Brake represents the most recent extension of this effort. This new lightweight design provides excellent retarding performance with zero valve train height increase. The Bridge Brake is especially suited for small-displacement engines and other applications where packaging space is at a premium.

This braking system, which was first launched on the Hyundai 10L engine, replaces the standard exhaust valve bridge with a braking valve bridge. Based on Jacobs’ extensive Lost Motion know-how, the traditional valve train componentry is maintained, while allowing new complex valve motions to be achieved.

The US patent office recently granted comprehensive patent 7,905,208. This patent, along with other Jacobs Intellectual Property, covers this technology and its derivatives, allowing adaptation to various engine configurations.

As vehicle and engine manufacturers strive to reduce their impact on the environment and create more energy efficient trucks, the adoption of start/stop and hybrid technologies will become more prevalent. Jacobs continues to create new technologies such as this decompression device to support our customer’s efforts.

The Jacobs’ prototype bleeder/decompression system is a bolt-on device which holds an exhaust valve open during startup to reduce the amount of torque required to start the engine. Test data confirms that this reduction in torque leads to a reduction in energy consumed by the starter. This technology provides vehicle retarding, reduced wear and tear on the starting system, improved cold start, reduced battery drain, and less shaking during engine shut-down.

On October 3rd, 2011, Jacobs will present this new technology in a poster display at the “Directions in Engine-efficiency and Emissions Research” (DEER) conference in Detroit, MI. This poster covers Jacobs’ mechanical bleeder/decompression technology development efforts along with simulation and test results.

The new Model 460 Engine Brake by Jacobs® was developed in conjunction with Cummins engineers to provide an engine brake which offers more retarding performance, less weight, fewer components and lower height than the Model 411E Engine Brake for the ISM engine.

The Model 460 Engine Brake is rated between 346 and 390 horsepower at 1,900 - 2,100 rpm respectively and will be offered as optional equipment, comprising of two engine brake housings and special exhaust valve bridges.
